My map obsession

I realised my map obsession. Unbelievable, but apparently it was evident for the people outside myself. How I didn’t notice? I don’t know.

A few days ago I told Erwin — I think I’m a bit obsessed with maps. It took him a weird silence to say to me: are you serious?

I was serious, I just realised it!

Then, I remembered. I put together map jigsaw puzzles, from 1000 to 5000 pieces: from old world maps to glowing night sky maps. Wherever I went, I kept a map. And for several years I fixed them on my bedroom’s ceiling. It was covered with mainly touristic maps and transport routes (metro maps have a special place in my obsessive heart).

So, yeah, I’m a bit obsessed. Two years ago, I enrolled on an art adult’s night class, ceramics specifically. My final project was called “territories”. I made a lovely sketchbook about mapping, from the geographic concepts to my very personal route that took me to Cork.

Now I’m learning GIS stuff, caused by an excellent book: Geographies of Obesity. Highly recommended.

Territories. Unglazed porcelain with red iron oxide.
